CHILDREN'S PSYCHOTHERAPEUTIC COUNSELLING

WHAT IS COUNSELLING?
Counselling is a process of talking about and working through your personal problems with a counsellor. The counsellor helps you to address your problems in a positive way by helping you to clarify the issues, explore options, develop strategies and increase self-awareness.

WHO WILL HELP ME & MY CHILD?

Our Children's Psychotherapeutic Counselling is delivered by Leanne McAlarney.

Leanne has over 16 years clinical experience as a Social Worker, Therapeutic Senior Practitioner and Psychotherapeutic Counsellor working within the field of Safeguarding, Fostering and Adoption, Bereavement and loss and self-harm/suicide.

She is trained in Psychotherapeutic Counselling, Hypnotherapy, Emotional Freedom Technique, Jungian Sand Tray Therapy amongst other trainings.

She has developed a strong knowledge and clinical experience working with adults and children who have encountered adverse childhood events and psychological trauma.

Her therapeutic approach is integrative working within a Psychodynamic, Jungian and Client-Centred approach, encouraging emotional expression and honesty. She works in a manner that ensures the integrity of each client is maintained throughout the therapeutic relationship.

Depending upon the assessed need, she offers:

·  Direct therapeutic intervention with child or adult.
·  Work alongside child and their key attachment figure
·  Work indirectly through co-working with individuals important to the young person.

WHAT IS THE MAIN GOAL?
Promote psychological wellbeing and adjustment
Maximise social and educational engagement and
Improve overall well-being in the child/adolescent/family dynamics

SAND THERAPY

The use of sandplay with children is well documented not only with children but with young people and adults too. Sandplay was developed in the 1950’s by a Jungian analysis Dora Kalff.

Clients will select the figures and place in the sand tray, creating three dimensional images, a story. When creating a tray many clients are engaged in a therapeutic space which allows for undirected thinking, unconscious awakening and access to deep rooted issues which influence present day behaviours, thinking and anxieties.

Sandplay offers a different way of working, from the more traditional directive and cognitive ways. It provides an immersive experience allowing for sensory integration and awareness.

Through Sandplay, clients are supported to tell their story in a creative way, allowing for greater healing and reconnection to self.

As Carl Young said, ”Often the hands will solve a mystery that the intellect has struggled with in vain.”

HYPNOTHERAPY

Hypnotherapy is a powerful modality which uses a clients natural trances state to explore unconscious processing, which influences our schemes, core beliefs and destructive patterns of behaviour. Hypnotherapy can identify, target and change old patterns of behaviour by creating new empowering thoughts and imagery leading to new processing and change in behaviour.

Leanne is trained in Hypnotherapy and registered with the National Hypnotherapy Society. She is completing an additional training in RTT ( Rapid Transformation Therapy) certificate level.

Rapid Transformational Therapy combines hypnotherapy, psychotherapy, CBT and neuroscience principles.

Leanne's interest is using hypnotherapy techniques to challenge unhelpful childhood beliefs, which affects self-esteem, self-confidence and relationship difficulties.

Through positive imagery, mindfulness techniques and progressive muscle techniques, can support clients to develop positive wellbeing, control over bodily responses to anxiety and stress.

EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUES

Initially developed in the 1990s by Gary Craig, EFT has grown in research supporting individuals who experience stress, anxiety and other related symptoms. EFT is also known as tapping or psychological acupressure, which involves tapping on specific points on the body (Meridan Points), primarily on the head and the face, in a particular sequence. EFT believes ill health is a result of blocks or imbalances in the flow of energy. According to EFT, tapping on these meridian points restores the balance of energy to resolve physical and emotional issues.

Leanne has used EFT for children, young people and adults. In particular, she has found women who have experienced birth trauma have achieved positive results with EFT: aiding in their recovery and release of emotional symptoms pertaining to trauma.

Men have also been very receptive to EFT and the Haven Approach leading to powerful release in emotional symptoms and clarity of events.

THERAPEUTIC PLAY SKILLS

Leanne has trained in Theraplay and Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy principles (Level 1:-5 days each training) with Psychological Pathways.

She has undertaken her level 6 Therapeutic Play Skills through the Children Therapy Centre, in addition to other trainings hosted by the Centre.

She has completed both the Foundation and Advanced level of TraumaPlay through Nurture House, with Paris Goodman-Year (An American Clinical Social Worker and Play Therapist)
